Exodus 18:1-27; Proverbs 19:20
“Listen now to my voice; I will give you counsel, and God will be with you.”
Moses was exhausted.
From sunrise to sunset, people lined up outside his tent. Hundreds of them. All day long, they brought their problems to him. “Moses, my neighbor stole my sheep!” “Moses, settle this argument!” “Moses, my wife won’t listen to me!”
One person after another. Every day. No breaks. No help. Just Moses trying to solve everyone’s problems by himself.
His father-in-law Jethro watched this chaos and shook his head. “What are you doing?” Jethro asked Moses that evening. “Why are you trying to do everything alone? This is killing you! Look how long people have to wait.” Moses sighed. “The people come to me to ask God what to do.” Jethro smiled with love, not criticism. “Son, you’re doing good work, but you’re doing it the wrong way. You can’t carry two million people on your shoulders.” Then Jethro gave advice that would change everything: “Teach the people God’s laws so they know right from wrong. Then choose good men you can trust. Let them handle the easy cases.
You only deal with the hard ones.” Here’s what amazed everyone: Moses listened. Think about it. Moses was the greatest leader in Israel’s history. He talked with God face to face. He could have said, “Thanks, but I know what I’m doing.” Instead, Moses said, “You’re right. Let’s do it your way.” So Moses chose capable men and trained them. Suddenly, people got help faster. Moses had time to rest. Everyone was happier.
But here’s the beautiful part: Jethro wasn’t even a Hebrew! Yet God used him to teach His greatest leader an important lesson. Great leaders aren’t people who never need advice. Great leaders are people who listen to good advice and aren’t too proud to change.
Did You Know? The organizational system Jethro suggested—leaders over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens—became the model for leadership structures that many nations still use today!
🔥 Personal Reflection:
- When was the last time you asked for advice instead of trying to handle everything alone?
- What makes it hard for you to accept suggestions from others?
- Who has God placed in your life to give you wise counsel?
🙏 Prayer: Dear God, help me be humble enough to listen to wise advice. Don’t let pride keep me from learning and growing. Make me teachable like Moses. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
