Exodus 17:1-7; John 7:37-38
“Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.”
Not again. The people looked around at the dry, cracked ground. No springs. No wells. Just rocks and sand as far as they could see. Their water bottles were empty. Their mouths felt like cotton. Little children whimpered for something to drink. “Why did you bring us here to die?” they screamed at Moses. The crowd pressed closer, their eyes wild with panic. Some picked up stones. Moses felt terrified. His own people, ready to kill him for something he couldn’t control.
So Moses cried out to God. “Take your walking stick,” God said. “I will stand on the rock. When you hit it, water will flow.” Did you hear that? GOD would stand on the rock. The Creator of the universe would position Himself on a piece of stone so Moses could strike it.
Moses raised his staff and brought it down hard. CRACK! Then came the most beautiful sound they’d ever heard: fresh, cool water pouring out of solid rock. Not a trickle—a river! Enough for two million people and all their animals. But Moses understood something deeper. Many years later, the apostle Paul would write: “That Rock was Christ.”
At the cross, God the Father stood on the Rock of Jesus. The hammer of justice struck His Son so that streams of forgiveness could flow to everyone who thirsts for grace. When you feel spiritually dry and desperate, remember: Jesus was struck so you could drink. He was wounded so you could be healed.
Did You Know? Archaeological evidence suggests this area had underground springs that could have been released when the rock was struck. But the miracle was in God’s perfect timing and the supernatural abundance of water that flowed for forty years!
🔥 Personal Reflection:
- When you face problems, do you panic first or pray first?
- How has Jesus been your “Rock” during difficult times in your life?
- What “spiritual thirst” in your life needs Jesus’ living water today?
🙏 Prayer: Dear God, when I feel dry and desperate, help me remember that Jesus is my Rock. Thank You for allowing Him to be struck so that rivers of grace could flow to me. Fill my spiritual thirst with Your living water. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
