“Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight.” — Exodus 33:13 (NKJV)
Moses sat outside his tent one evening, looking up at the stars. For months, he had been talking with the Lord every day like a best friend. He had seen amazing miracles and led two million people through the desert. But something was bothering him. The next morning, Moses went to the tent of meeting. When the Lord came down, Moses shared what was in his heart. “Lord, You tell me to lead these people, but You haven’t told me who is coming with me,” Moses said. “I know You say You know my name and that You like me. But…”
Moses stopped, trying to find the right words.
“Lord, I just realized something scary. Even though we talk every day, even though I’ve seen Your powerful miracles, I don’t really know You. I know what You can do, but I don’t know who You are inside Your heart.” Moses was being completely honest. Here was the great leader admitting that knowing someone’s power is not the same as knowing their heart. “Please, show me how You think so I can truly know You,” Moses said, his voice sad with longing. “I don’t want to just know Your rules or Your miracles. I want to know Your heart, Your feelings, the real You.”
Moses had learned something that changed everything: the more he learned about the Lord, the more he knew he still had so much more to learn. It was like looking at the ocean and realizing you had only seen a tiny bit of water.
“And Lord,” Moses added, “please promise You’ll come with us to the Promised Land Yourself. If You don’t come with us, don’t make us go anywhere. What good would it be to reach the Promised Land if You’re not there?”
The Lord’s answer made Moses happy: “I will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
But Moses wasn’t done. “Lord, how will people know we’re different from everyone else? Only if You go with us! That’s what makes us special—You being with us.” The Lord was pleased with His friend’s honest heart. “I will do what you asked because you are special to Me, and I know your name.” Moses left happy that day. He had learned that real friendship with the Lord wasn’t about knowing facts about Him—it was about knowing His heart and how He thinks and loves.
Did You Know? Moses had already spent over 80 days with the Lord and talked with Him every day, but he realized he needed to know the Lord’s heart better. There’s a big difference between knowing about someone and really knowing them. Moses wanted to understand the Lord’s feelings and character, not just His power.
🔥 Personal Reflection:
- Do you know facts about the Creator, or do you actually know His heart and character?
- What’s the difference between knowing what someone can do versus knowing who they really are?
- How would your prayers change if you focused more on knowing His character than asking for things?
🙏 Prayer: Dear Lord, I think like Moses, I know about You but don’t really know You. Help me want to know Your heart and how You think, not just Your power to help me. Show me who You really are inside. I don’t want to just ask You for things—I want to know the real You. Make me hungry to know You better every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
