“So the LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he would return to the camp, but his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tabernacle.” — Exodus 33:11 (NKJV)

Every morning, Moses would walk outside the Israelite camp carrying a simple tent. The people watched from their doorways as their leader set up what they called “the tent of meeting” far away from their bustling community. “Why does Moses go so far away to pray?” asked young Miriam, watching from her family’s tent. Her father Benjamin smiled softly. “Because after what happened with the golden calf, Moses wants to make sure God knows we’re serious about following Him again. He’s meeting with God in a holy place, separate from our camp.”

As Moses disappeared inside the tent, something amazing happened. A thick cloud came down and covered the entrance. Everyone in the camp knew what this meant—the Lord Himself had come to talk with Moses!

“Look!” whispered Miriam’s mother. “God is there!”

Immediately, every single person in the camp—men, women, children, even babies—came outside and bowed down in worship. They couldn’t see what was happening inside the tent, but they knew their God was meeting with their leader. Inside the tent, the most incredible friendship in history was taking place. Moses wasn’t just praying to a distant God—he was talking with the Lord like best friends talk to each other. They discussed the people’s needs, the journey ahead, and Moses’ concerns about leading such a difficult nation. “Lord, I need Your help,” Moses said honestly. “These people are hard to lead, and I don’t always know what to do.”

The Lord listened patiently, giving Moses wisdom, encouragement, and direction. They talked for hours, just like close friends who never run out of things to say to each other. When Moses finally came out of the tent, his face was glowing with joy. He had spent time with his dearest Friend, and it showed.

But here’s what made everyone smile: young Joshua, Moses’ helper, didn’t want to leave! Even when Moses returned to camp, Joshua stayed by the tent, hoping to experience just a little bit of what Moses had experienced with God.

“Why do you stay, Joshua?” Moses asked one day. “Because,” Joshua replied with wonder in his voice, “if this is where God meets with people, this is where I want to be.” Day after day, Moses returned to the tent. Day after day, God came down to meet with him. Day after day, their friendship grew deeper and stronger.

The people began to understand something beautiful: their God wasn’t a distant, angry deity. He was a Friend who loved spending time with those who wanted to know Him.

Did You Know? This “tent of meeting” was different from the tabernacle that would be built later. This was a simple tent Moses set up outside the camp as a temporary meeting place with God after the golden calf incident. The cloud descending showed God’s presence, and everyone bowing showed their respect. Joshua staying at the tent reveals his hunger to know God personally, which prepared him to become Moses’ successor.

🔥 Personal Reflection:

  • Do you talk to God like a friend, or do you only pray when you need something?
  • What would change in your life if you spent time with God every single day?
  • How can you create your own “tent of meeting” where you regularly spend time alone with God?

🙏 Prayer: Dear God, I want to be Your friend like Moses was. Help me find time every day to talk with You, not just when I’m in trouble, but because I want to know You better. Show me how to make prayer feel like talking with my best friend instead of just asking for things. Thank You that You want to spend time with me. Help me never be too busy for our friendship. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
