“For to us a child is born… and he will be called… Prince of Peace.” — Isaiah 9:6 (NIV)
Prophet Elisha stood calmly in his house, completely surrounded by enemy soldiers. His servant Gehazi was shaking with terror. “Master! The Syrian army has us trapped! What do we do?” Gehazi cried. Elisha smiled peacefully. “Don’t be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those with them.”
“WHAT? I see hundreds of enemies and just US!” Gehazi looked around wildly.
“LORD, open his eyes,” Elisha prayed. Suddenly, Gehazi gasped! The hills were FULL of horses and chariots of fire – an entire army of angels protecting them!
As Syrian soldiers rushed forward, Elisha prayed again. “LORD, strike them with blindness.” Instantly, the entire Syrian army couldn’t see! Elisha walked out calmly and said, “Looking for Elisha? Follow me!” And he led the blind army straight into Samaria – right into the middle of the Israelite army! When their eyes opened, the Syrians froze in terror. Trapped!
The king of Israel came running with his sword drawn. “Shall I kill them? Shall I kill them?” He was excited! “NO!” Elisha said firmly. “Do not kill them! Instead, prepare food and water for them!” “FEED our enemies?” The king looked shocked. “Yes! Prepare a great feast!” So they did. The confused Syrian soldiers sat down nervously, expecting death. But instead, they were served like honored guests! One soldier whispered, “Why are they feeding us?”
An older commander replied thoughtfully, “Because their God is different. He doesn’t just destroy enemies. He wants… something more.” As they ate, Elisha walked among them. “The God we serve is powerful enough to destroy you. But that’s not what He wants. He wants peace. He wants you to know He is good and merciful.” After the meal, Elisha said, “Now go home. Tell your master what you saw today.” The soldiers walked home in silence, amazed. Later, Gehazi asked, “Master, why didn’t we destroy them?”
Elisha smiled. “Because violence breeds more violence. If we killed them, more armies would come for revenge, and fighting would never end. But peace… peace breeds peace.” “I don’t understand,” Gehazi admitted.
“Watch,” Elisha said. And the Bible says, “So the bands from Aram stopped raiding Israel’s territory.” One act of mercy ended the war! Feeding enemies accomplished what killing them never could. That night, Elisha told Gehazi about God’s vision: “One day, God will send the Prince of Peace. In His kingdom, the wolf will live with the lamb. Natural enemies will become friends!”
“Is that possible?” Gehazi asked. “With God, yes! You see, God’s ultimate goal was never endless war. His goal is everlasting peace! Every battle He fights is to bring us closer to that final peace.” “So the conquest of Canaan was to stop evil so peace could grow?” “Exactly! And one day, the Prince of Peace will bring complete peace – no more war, no more fighting, no more pain!” Gehazi looked at the freed Syrian soldiers walking home. “So today was a little picture of that future?”
Elisha smiled. “Yes, boy. Today you saw God’s heart. He is mighty enough to destroy, but He prefers to restore. He can fight, but He wants peace. Always, always peace.”
Did You Know? The Old Testament prophets like Isaiah and Micah wrote beautiful poems about the future peaceful kingdom! They described a time when people “will beat their swords into plowshares” (turning weapons into farming tools), when nations won’t train for war anymore, and when the Prince of Peace will rule with perfect justice. This shows that God’s heart always longed for peace, not war!
🔥 Personal Reflection:
- How did Elisha show God’s heart for peace instead of just winning the battle?
- When someone is mean to you, do you want to “destroy” them or find a way to make peace?
- What are some ways you can be an “agent of peace” in your school, family, or neighborhood?
🙏 Prayer: Dear Prince of Peace, thank You that Your ultimate goal is not war but everlasting peace. Thank You for showing us through Elisha’s story that mercy is more powerful than revenge. Help me be a peacemaker like You. When others hurt me or make me angry, help me find ways to make peace instead of fighting back. I can’t wait for the day when You return and bring perfect peace to the whole world – when there’s no more crying, fighting, or hurting. Until then, help me spread Your peace wherever I go. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
