“You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, tongues, and kings.” — Revelation 10:11 (NKJV)
In Thailand, workers were moving a large statue covered in old, cracked plaster. Suddenly, the statue slipped and crashed to the ground. A piece of plaster broke off. One worker gasped. “Look! There’s gold underneath!” They carefully removed more plaster. To their amazement, the entire statue was made of solid gold – worth over 250 million dollars! Historians discovered the truth: Almost 200 years earlier, people had covered the golden Buddha with plaster to hide it from invaders. But over time, everyone forgot what was underneath. For generations, people walked past a priceless treasure, thinking it was just worthless plaster.
An old woman who heard the story said sadly, “How terrible – to forget
something so valuable for so long!”
But then she thought about her own church. “Wait… have we done the same thing? Have we forgotten why our church exists?” She remembered the story from 1844. Thousands of believers, including William Miller, were convinced Jesus would return that year. They prepared their hearts. They said goodbye to friends. They waited on hilltops. But Jesus didn’t come. The disappointment was crushing. Some gave up completely. Others were angry. Many walked away from their faith.
But God spoke to those who remained faithful: “You must prophesy AGAIN!” He gave them a clear mission through Revelation 14 – three angels with three powerful messages that must go to every nation, tribe, language, and people on earth! The first angel proclaimed: “Fear God and give Him glory, for the hour of His judgment has come! Worship the Creator!” The second angel warned: “Babylon is fallen! Don’t be confused by false teachings!” The third angel gave the most serious warning about earth’s final crisis. And God said to those disappointed believers: “This is why you’re still here! Take these messages to the whole world! Prophesy again!”
The old woman realized something powerful: “Our church wasn’t born from success – it was born from disappointment that turned into mission! God took our biggest failure and turned it into the reason we exist!” She thought of Ezekiel’s vision – a river flowing from God’s temple, starting small but growing bigger and bigger. Everywhere the river flowed, it brought life! Dead things became alive! The sick were healed! Trees grew fruit every month!
“That’s what our church should be,” she whispered. “A river of life flowing out to heal a dying world!” She looked around her church and saw people who had forgotten. They came to church each week, but they’d forgotten why the church existed.
Like the golden Buddha covered in plaster, the precious mission had been covered over and forgotten. “We must remember!” she said with tears. “We exist to take God’s final message to every person on earth! This is not optional. This is why God called us into being!”
Did You Know? After the Great Disappointment in 1844, many believers gave up their faith completely. But those who stayed faithful discovered something amazing – God wasn’t saying “You were wrong.” He was saying “You’re not done yet! Now prophesy AGAIN!” From that bitter disappointment came the Seventh-day Adventist Church with a worldwide mission. Today, what started as a small disappointed group has grown to over 22 million members in more than 200 countries, all carrying the three angels’ messages! What looked like failure became the beginning of God’s final movement!
🔥 Personal Reflection:
- Has your church become like a stationary object that’s forgotten to move?
- What would it look like for your church to be like Ezekiel’s river – flowing out and bringing life to your community?
- How can you help your church remember its mission?
🙏 Prayer: Dear God, forgive us for forgetting why You called our church into existence. Like the golden Buddha covered in plaster, we’ve hidden our true mission under busyness and routine. Help us remember that You told us to “prophesy again” – to take the three angels’ messages to every person on earth! Make our church like Ezekiel’s river, flowing out with life and healing. Don’t let us become stationary and stuck. Keep us moving forward with Your mission until Jesus comes! In His name, Amen.
