“We walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV)

Deep inside a mountain tunnel in northern India, 41 construction workers sat in darkness. A massive pile of rocks and debris had collapsed, trapping them underground. Outside, their families wept and prayed.

Day 1 passed. Then day 2. Then day 5.

The men grew restless. One worker said later, “As it became clear we would be there for a long time, we grew very anxious.” Rescue teams tried sophisticated machinery. It broke. They tried drilling from different angles. The rock was too hard. Days turned into weeks.

Day 10. Day 12. Day 15.

Inside the dark tunnel, the trapped men could hear drilling sounds that would start, then suddenly stop. Each time the drilling stopped, their hearts sank. “Are they giving up on us?” some wondered. But outside, rescue teams never quit. When machines failed, they called in 24 coal miners who began digging through the massive debris pile by hand – shovel by shovel, rock by rock. Finally, on day 17, a small opening appeared! Rescuers reached through and grabbed the first worker’s hand. One by one, all 41 men walked out into the sunlight, alive!

A reporter asked one rescued man, “How did you survive 17 days underground?” His answer was simple but powerful: “We never lost hope.” An old woman watching the rescue on television wiped tears from her eyes. “Seventeen days seemed so long to those men,” she whispered. “But we’ve been waiting much longer than that.” She thought about Earth – trapped in sin for 6,000 years since the Garden of Eden. She thought about how “the whole creation groans and labors” (Romans 8:22), waiting to be rescued.

She remembered other long waits in the Bible:

Adam and Eve thought their first baby, Cain, would be the promised Savior. But they had to keep waiting. Abraham was promised the land of Canaan. His descendants waited 500 years before entering it! Israelite slaves in Egypt worked under the hot sun, wondering if God had forgotten them. A new Pharaoh arose “who did not know Joseph.” It seemed like they would be slaves forever.

But then – suddenly! – God moved! Plagues fell. The Red Sea parted. After a long, long wait, God’s people were FREE!

“That’s what the signs of Jesus’ coming are like,” the old woman realized. “They’re not telling us exactly when Jesus will come – they’re telling us we’re on the right road!” She remembered driving with her grandson. “Grandma, are we almost there?” he kept asking. “I don’t know exactly when we’ll arrive,” she had told him. “But see that sign? We’re on Highway M1. That means we’re going the right way!” The old woman looked out her window at the troubled world – wars, diseases, disasters, confusion. “These aren’t signs that God forgot us,” she said.

“These are signs that we’re on the right road! Jesus IS coming!” She remembered Ellen White’s words: “The final movements will be rapid ones.” After a long wait, deliverance comes suddenly – just like those 41 trapped workers who waited 17 days and were suddenly free! “We must be like those trapped workers,” she prayed. “No matter how long the wait feels, we must NEVER lose hope!”

Did You Know?  For 6,000 years since Adam and Eve sinned, Planet Earth has been “groaning” and waiting for rescue! Every generation of believers has hoped Jesus would come in their lifetime. While the wait seems long to us, the Bible promises that when Jesus finally comes, everything will happen FAST! Ellen White wrote: “Great changes are soon to take place in our world, and the final movements will be rapid ones.” After centuries of waiting, suddenly – in the blink of an eye – the rescue will come!

🔥 Personal Reflection:

  • When waiting gets hard, what helps you keep hope alive?
  • How are the signs of Jesus’ coming like road signs showing you’re on the right highway?
  • What can you learn from the trapped workers who said “we never lost hope”?

🙏 Prayer: Dear Jesus, sometimes the waiting feels so long. Like those workers trapped for 17 days, we wonder if rescue will ever come. But help us remember – You have never forgotten us! Every sign we see in the world reminds us we’re on the right road. You ARE coming! Help us be patient and faithful while we wait. When we feel discouraged, remind us of Your promise: “He who is coming WILL come and will not delay!” Let it be said of us, like those rescued workers, that we “never lost hope.” In Your name, Amen.
