“So Moses gave a commandment, and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp, saying, ‘Let neither man nor woman do any more work for the offering of the sanctuary.’ For the material they had was sufficient for all the work to be made, and too much.” — Exodus 36:6-7 (NKJV)
Moses stood up early one morning and made an announcement that had never been made before in history. “Stop giving!” Moses shouted across the camp. “We have too much!” The people couldn’t believe their ears. Stop giving? Too much? What did that mean?
It had all started when Moses asked for materials to build the Lord’s house. “Bring gold, silver, beautiful cloth, precious stones, and wood,” he had said.
What happened next amazed everyone. People came running with their most precious things. Women took off their gold jewelry. Men brought their silver cups. Everyone gave their best treasures, laughing and crying with joy. “Here’s my gold bracelet!” shouted Sarah, a young mother. “Take my silver mirror!” called Rebecca, an elderly woman. “I want to give my best cloth!” said David, a merchant.
The pile of treasures grew bigger and bigger. But people kept coming with more!
The next day, even more people brought gifts. And the next day, even more! Moses watched in amazement as mountains of gold, silver, and beautiful materials grew higher each day. Then something incredible happened. Bezalel, the master builder, came running to Moses with a big problem.
“Moses!” Bezalel said, out of breath. “You have to stop them! We have way too much stuff! We can’t use it all!” Moses looked at the huge piles of treasures and started laughing. In all his life, he had never seen anything like this. People were giving so much that it was becoming a problem! “But they want to keep giving!” Moses said, still amazed. “I know!” Bezalel replied. “But we already have enough gold to build ten tabernacles! We have enough silver for twenty! We have enough beautiful cloth for fifty! Please, make them stop!”
So Moses did something no leader had ever done before. He told people to stop giving because they had given too much. As the announcement went through the camp, people smiled with tears in their eyes. They had given so much that their leader had to beg them to stop. This wasn’t just about building materials. The Lord had also filled Bezalel and other workers with His Spirit, giving them amazing skills to do perfect work. Their hands could create beautiful things they had never made before.
The people learned something wonderful that day: when you really love someone, giving becomes a joy, not a duty.
Did You Know? The materials came from gifts the Egyptians had given the Israelites when they left Egypt (Exodus 12:35-36). This was the first time in history a religious leader had to tell people to stop giving because they gave too much! The Holy Spirit gave special skills to craftsmen like Bezalel and Aholiab, showing that practical abilities for sacred work are spiritual gifts too.
🔥 Personal Reflection:
- When was the last time you gave something to the Lord with real joy in your heart?
- What holds you back from giving generously – fear, selfishness, or not trusting that He will take care of you?
- How would your giving change if you really believed the Lord loves generous hearts?
🙏 Prayer: Dear Lord, give me a heart like the Israelites who gave with so much joy that Moses had to tell them to stop. Help me not be selfish with my money, time, or talents. Show me that everything I have really belongs to You anyway. Fill me with Your Spirit so I can use my skills and abilities to serve You well. Make giving a joy, not a burden. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
