“Now it was so, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the Testimony were in Moses’ hand when he came down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him.” — Exodus 34:29 (NKJV)
Moses walked down Mount Sinai feeling happier than ever, carrying the new stone tablets. He had just spent the most incredible forty days of his life, listening to the Lord describe His heart of perfect love and goodness. As Moses got close to the camp, people started pointing at him from far away.
“Look!” someone yelled. “Moses is coming back!”
But when he got closer, something weird happened. People started moving away from him, their eyes big with fear and wonder. “Moses!” Aaron shouted, but he stepped back too. “Your face! Your face is shining!” Moses stopped, confused. “What do you mean, shining?” “You’re glowing like a light!” Aaron said, amazed. “We can barely look at you!” Moses touched his face, but it felt normal. He had no idea that his skin was shining bright like a lamp. People whispered to each other: “He’s been with the Lord for forty days, and now he looks like someone lit him up from inside!”
Moses didn’t know that something amazing had happened to him on the mountain. It wasn’t just that he had been near divine glory—other people had experienced that before. It wasn’t even that he had talked with the Lord face to face—that had been happening for months. Here’s what was different: for forty days, Moses had been listening to descriptions of perfect goodness, mercy, kindness, patience, and love. He had been soaking up the character of pure goodness like a sponge soaks up water. And when you spend that much time thinking about perfect love, it changes you from the inside out.
The closer Moses got to the Lord’s heart, the more he became like Him. And now everyone could see it on his face. “Don’t be scared,” Moses said gently. “Come closer.” But people were too amazed to come near. Finally, Aaron and the leaders came close, and Moses shared everything the Lord had told him.
When Moses finished talking, people were still staring at his shining face. So he took a cloth and covered his face until the next time he went to talk with the Lord.
But here’s the most amazing part: Moses had no idea he was glowing. When you spend time thinking about pure goodness and love, you don’t notice how it changes you—but everyone else does. From then on, Moses glowed every time he spent time with the Lord. And people learned something beautiful: when someone really knows the heart of divine love, you can see it on their face, hear it in their words, and watch it in their actions. Moses had become like a mirror, showing everyone the goodness he had been looking at.
Did You Know? Moses’ face didn’t shine just from being near divine presence—he had been there many times before without glowing. It shone after he spent forty days thinking about divine character and goodness. 2 Corinthians 3:18 says we become more like the Lord as we think about His character. The closer we get to perfect love, the more we show it to others, often without knowing it ourselves.
🔥 Personal Reflection:
- What would people see in your face and actions if you spent more time thinking about divine love and goodness?
- How might thinking daily about the Creator’s mercy and kindness change how you treat others?
- Why do you think Moses didn’t know he was glowing, but everyone else could see it?
🙏 Prayer: Dear Lord, I want to spend so much time thinking about Your goodness, mercy, and love that it changes me from the inside out. Help me think about Your character instead of just asking for things. Change my heart so people can see Your love in my face, my words, and my actions. Like Moses, let me become like a mirror that shows Your goodness to everyone around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
