Scripture Reading: James 2:1-9
“And above all things have fervent love for one another, for ‘love will cover a multitude of sins.'” (1 Peter 4:8, NKJV)
In the vibrant neighborhood of San Javier in Medellín, Colombia, Isabela ran a small comedor (neighborhood restaurant) serving traditional dishes like bandeja paisa (a hearty platter with beans, rice, meat, plantain, and avocado) and arepas (corn cakes). Each morning, she welcomed locals with a warm smile and nourishing meals.
One rainy morning, a group of Venezuelan refugees stood hesitantly at her door. Their journey had been long, their faces etched with fatigue and uncertainty. Understanding their plight, Isabela invited them in, offering steaming cups of chocolate caliente (hot chocolate) and plates of food, free of charge.
Tensions between locals and the influx of refugees had been growing, with some in the community expressing concern over resources. Observing Isabela’s actions, her assistant whispered, “Isabela, we can’t afford to feed those who can’t pay.”
Isabela replied softly, “My abuela (grandmother) taught me that when Jesus said to love our neighbors, He didn’t specify their origin.”
Word of Isabela’s kindness spread. The next day, community members arrived with donations of food and supplies, supporting her mission. Her comedor transformed into a place where locals and refugees dined together, sharing stories and laughter. Through simple acts of love, Isabela bridged cultural divides, embodying the principle that love fulfills the law.
Just as Isabela fed those who couldn’t pay, Jesus demonstrated similar compassion when feeding the five thousand. When a large crowd followed Him to a remote place, the disciples suggested sending them away to buy food. Concerned about their limited resources—only five loaves and two fish—they doubted they could feed everyone. But Jesus, moved by compassion, had the people sit down, blessed the available food, and miraculously provided enough for all, with leftovers remaining. Both Isabela and Jesus saw beyond resource limitations to the immediate human need before them, understanding that love means meeting tangible needs, not just offering words of comfort.
Personal Application:
- Are there individuals or groups in your community you’ve hesitated to engage with due to cultural or social differences? How can you extend a hand of friendship and understanding?
- Reflect on a time when someone showed you unexpected kindness. How did it impact you? How can you pay that forward in your daily interactions?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for exemplifying unconditional love. Help us see others through Your eyes, embracing those different from us. Instill in us a heart that seeks to serve, uplift, and unify. May our actions reflect Your love, breaking down walls of division and building bridges of compassion. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
