“Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do amazing things among you.” — Joshua 3:5

For the first time in the book of Joshua, the people saw it – the golden ark of the covenant being carried by the priests. Samuel, a young boy, had heard stories about this special golden box, but he had never seen it lead them anywhere before.

“What’s so special about that golden box?” Samuel whispered to his father as they watched the priests carefully carrying it. His father’s eyes filled with wonder. “Son, that’s not just any box. Inside it are the stone tablets with God’s Ten Commandments that He gave to Moses. There’s also Aaron’s special rod and a jar of manna from our desert days.” Samuel’s eyes grew wide. “God’s own words are in there?” “Yes,” his father nodded. “And more than that – God Himself sits above it. When that box moves, God is moving. When it leads us, God is leading us.”

Joshua stood before the whole camp and pointed to the ark. “Look everyone! This is not our plan. This is not our fight. God Himself is going ahead of us into the Promised Land. He is the boss of this army, not me!” The people began to understand. They had been getting ready to cross the Jordan River for days, but now they saw the real truth – God was going to cross first and make it safe for them. “But Joshua,” someone called out, “how do we get ready to follow God?”

Joshua’s voice became serious. “Get your hearts clean! Wash your clothes, pray, and ask God to forgive your sins. Just like the priests wash and get ready before they can work in God’s house, we must get ready before we can follow God into His miracle.”

Samuel watched as his family spent the whole day preparing to cross the Jordan River. They washed their clothes until they were bright white. His parents prayed and threw away small fake gods they had been hiding. They made their hearts clean and ready.

An older woman in their camp said, “I remember when we were slaves in Egypt. We were too scared to do anything. But when God went ahead of us, He made a way through the Red Sea. Now He’s doing it again with this river!” That evening, as Samuel looked at the golden ark shining in the firelight, he finally understood. Tomorrow wasn’t about them being brave enough to cross a big rushing river. Tomorrow was about following the God of the whole universe, who had chosen to go ahead of them and make the impossible happen.

The ark wasn’t just leading them across the Jordan River – it was leading them into a whole new life where God would fight their battles for them.

Did You Know? This is the very first time the special golden box (ark of the covenant) is mentioned in the book of Joshua! The ark had three special things inside: the stone tablets with God’s Ten Commandments, Aaron’s rod that grew flowers to show he was God’s chosen priest, and a jar of manna (the special bread God gave them in the desert). When the people saw the ark, they knew God Himself was with them!

🔥 Personal Reflection:

  • Why did God want to go first instead of letting the people try to cross by themselves?
  • When you have a big problem, do you try to fix it alone or ask God to help you first?
  • How can you get your heart ready to see God work in your life?

🙏 Prayer: Dear God, thank You for wanting to go ahead of me and help with my problems, just like You did for the Israelites. Help me remember that good things happen when I follow You, not when I try to do everything by myself. When I’m scared or facing something too hard, remind me that You are leading the way. Help me get my heart ready to follow You by keeping it clean and good. Thank You for always being with me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
