“Then Moses went up, also Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and they saw the God of Israel. And there was under His feet as it were a paved work of sapphire stone, and it was like the very heavens in its clarity.” — Exodus 24:9-10 (NKJV)
The morning mist still clung to Mount Sinai as Moses looked at the seventy-three men gathered around him. Aaron stood close by, his weathered face showing both excitement and fear. Beside him were his two sons, Nadab and Abihu, young priests eager for this holy adventure. Behind them waited seventy of Israel’s most respected elders—men who had led their people through slavery and into freedom.
“The Lord has called us to come up the mountain,” Moses announced solemnly. “We are invited to see Him.” The elders looked at each other with wonder. See God? And live? They had heard the thunder and seen the lightning when God gave the Ten Commandments. Now they were invited closer. As they climbed higher up the holy mountain, their hearts pounded. The air grew thin, and the camp below became small dots. Then something happened that would change their lives forever. They saw God! The Bible tells us they saw the God of Israel. Under His feet was something like a floor made of beautiful blue sapphire stones, clear and bright as the perfect sky.
“We are seeing the Lord with our own eyes!” Aaron whispered to his sons, barely able to believe it. The elders fell to their knees, overwhelmed by the glory. Never had they imagined such beauty was possible. But the most amazing thing happened next. God did not strike them dead for seeing Him. Instead, He invited them to eat and drink right there in His holy presence! In their culture, sharing a meal meant becoming family. God was showing them they truly belonged to Him through the covenant they had just made.
Can you imagine? Seventy-three men sitting on the holy mountain of God, sharing food with the Creator of the universe! They laughed and talked and ate together as God’s honored guests. “This is the greatest day of our lives,” one elder said to another, breaking bread with trembling hands. “We will never forget this moment,” Nadab said to his brother Abihu, his young face glowing with joy.
But this wonderful story carries a warning we must not ignore. Some of these same men who saw God’s amazing glory later turned away from Him. Nadab and Abihu would later disobey God’s worship rules and die because of their pride. Some of the seventy elders would later complain and rebel against God in the wilderness.
Did You Know? In ancient Middle Eastern culture, eating together created bonds like family relationships. When someone invited you to share a meal, it meant they accepted you and promised to help you in times of trouble. For God to eat with these leaders showed they were truly His people through the covenant. But the sad reality is that spiritual privileges don’t automatically make us faithful—we must choose daily to follow God with humble hearts.
🔥 Personal Reflection:
- What does it mean that these leaders “saw God and ate and drank” with Him?
- Why do you think some people who had amazing experiences with God later turned away from Him?
- How can we stay humble and faithful when God gives us special blessings?
🙏 Prayer: Dear God, thank You for the amazing story of the seventy-three leaders who saw You and shared a meal in Your presence. Help me remember that seeing Your goodness is a gift, not something I earned. When You bless me with special moments, keep my heart humble and faithful to You always. Help me choose to follow You every day, not just when I feel close to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
