“Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:7 (NKJV)
Joshua looked across the Jordan River at the Promised Land. For forty years, the Israelites had dreamed about this moment. Now it was time to stop dreaming and start doing. The Lord had given Joshua a clear plan with four simple steps: “First, CROSS the Jordan River,” the Lord said. “I know it looks impossible, but I will make a way.” Joshua nodded, writing down the first step.
“Second, TAKE the land. Yes, there are giants and strong cities, but I will fight for you.” Joshua’s heart beat faster. Taking the land meant battles, courage, and trusting the Lord completely.
“Third, DIVIDE the land among all the tribes. Make sure everyone gets their fair share of what I’m giving them.” Joshua understood. It wasn’t enough to conquer the land – they had to organize it and live in it properly.
“Fourth, SERVE Me by obeying My laws. This is the most important part. If you forget to obey Me, you’ll lose everything else.” Joshua saw the pattern clearly now. The Lord had a plan, but it required action from the people. The Lord wouldn’t do everything automatically – He expected them to do their part. Joshua called his officers together. “Men, we have work to do! In three days, we cross the Jordan. Get ready!”
“But Joshua,” one officer said nervously, “the river is flooding. The cities have high walls. The people are strong warriors.” “That’s exactly why we need to follow the Lord’s plan perfectly,” Joshua replied. “He gives the orders, we obey them. He opens the way, we walk through it. He fights the battles, we show up ready.” Another officer asked, “What if we fail?” Joshua smiled. “We won’t fail if we do our part. The Lord has already done His part – He’s given us the land. Now we have to cross, take, divide, and serve. It’s that simple.”
The people began to understand. Success wasn’t magic. It was the Lord’s power plus their faithful obedience. The Lord would do what only He could do, and they would do what He asked them to do. “So this is the secret?” asked a young soldier. “Yes,” Joshua said. “The Lord takes the first step by giving us the promise. Then we take the next steps by obeying His instructions. When the Lord’s power meets our obedience, success is guaranteed.”
The officers left excited. They finally had a clear plan: Cross! Take! Divide! Serve! Each step built on the previous one, and each step required both the Lord’s power and their faithful response.
Did You Know? The book of Joshua is organized around these four Hebrew action words: Cross (chapters 1-5), Take (chapters 6-12), Divide (chapters 13-21), and Serve (chapters 22-24). This shows that the Lord’s promises aren’t automatic – they require our faithful response. Success comes when divine power meets human obedience.
🔥 Personal Reflection:
- What promises has the Lord made to you that you’re still waiting for instead of acting on?
- How do you balance trusting the Lord to do His part while doing your part faithfully?
- What would change in your life if you had a clear four-step plan like Joshua did?
🙏 Prayer: Dear Lord, help me understand that Your promises require my faithful response. Show me clearly what You want me to do, and give me courage to take the steps You’re asking me to take. Help me not just wait for You to do everything, but to do my part while trusting You to do what only You can do. Thank You for having a plan for my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
