“Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them—the children of Israel.” — Joshua 1:2 (NKJV)
Joshua sat alone in his tent, staring at the ground. Moses was dead. The greatest leader in Israel’s history was gone, and now everyone was looking at him to take over. “How can I do this?” Joshua whispered to himself. “Moses talked with the Lord face to face. Moses split the Red Sea. Moses got the Ten Commandments from heaven. I’m just… Joshua.” For forty years, Joshua had been Moses’ helper. He had watched Moses handle every crisis, every complaint, every impossible situation. Now it was his turn, and Joshua felt very small.
Then the Lord spoke to him. “Moses My servant is dead,” the Lord said gently. “Now get up. It’s time to cross the Jordan River and take the people into the land I’m giving them.” Joshua’s heart pounded. “But Lord, I’m not Moses!” “You’re right,” the Lord replied. “You’re not Moses. You’re Joshua, and that’s exactly who I need for this job.” The Lord continued, “Every place you walk, I have already given to you, just like I promised Moses. I will be with you just like I was with Moses. I will never leave you or give up on you.” Joshua felt tears in his eyes. “But what if I fail? What if I’m not strong enough or brave enough?”
“Then be strong and very brave!” the Lord said with love in His voice. “Don’t be scared or worried. Follow My Word carefully, and you will succeed wherever you go.” As Joshua listened, he began to understand something important. This wasn’t about replacing Moses. This was about the Lord choosing a new leader for a new time. Moses had done his job perfectly – leading the people out of Egypt and through the wilderness. Now it was time for someone else to do a different job – leading them into the Promised Land.
“I’m not supposed to be Moses,” Joshua realized. “I’m supposed to be me, following the same Lord who led Moses.” The Lord had a special plan. He would raise up leaders when His people needed them. Moses for the exodus. Joshua for the conquest. And someday, the greatest Leader of all would come – One who would be like Moses but even greater.
Joshua stood up, feeling different now. He wasn’t trying to fill Moses’ shoes anymore. He was wearing his own shoes, walking in the Lord’s strength, ready to do what the Lord had called him to do. The people were watching him, wondering if this new leader could handle the job. Joshua smiled. They would soon learn that their real Leader had never changed – it was still the Lord Himself.
Did You Know? Joshua’s name means “The Lord saves” (the same meaning as Jesus). Moses was called “the servant of the Lord” from the beginning, but Joshua earned that title only after a lifetime of faithful service (Joshua 24:29). Moses is mentioned 10 times in Joshua chapter 1, but Joshua only 4 times, showing that Moses’ legacy still dominated, but the true Leader was the Lord Himself.
🔥 Personal Reflection:
- When you face big challenges, do you focus on what you can’t do or on what the Lord can do through you?
- How does knowing that the Lord chooses different people for different times encourage you?
- What would change if you stopped trying to be like someone else and just focused on being who the Lord made you to be?
🙏 Prayer: Dear Lord, sometimes I feel like I have to be someone else to serve You well. Help me understand that You made me exactly who I am for a reason. When I face big challenges, remind me that You are my real Leader and strength. Help me stop comparing myself to others and just focus on following You faithfully. Give me courage to be who You made me to be. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
