“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” — Galatians 2:20

At the foot of Mount Sinai, the Israelites stood with hearts full of hope. God had just freed them from 400 years of slavery in Egypt! He split the Red Sea for them! He fed them with bread from heaven! Now God was asking them to be His special people – “a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” “Will you obey all that I command you?” God asked.

The people didn’t hesitate. “YES!

All that the Lord has spoken we will do!” they shouted enthusiastically. They meant it with all their hearts. Moses went up the mountain to meet with God. The people waited below, confident and sincere. But six weeks later… “Where is Moses? He’s been gone too long!” the people complained. “Aaron, make us gods we can see!” Aaron, the high priest himself, collected their gold and made a golden calf. The same people who had promised “we will do ALL that God commands” were now bowing down to an idol, eating, drinking, and partying in wild celebration.

When Moses came down and saw what was happening, he was so disgusted he threw down the stone tablets and broke them. What happened? Did the people lie when they made their promise? No. They were completely sincere.

Their problem was different – they weren’t honest about their own weakness.

They should have said, “Lord, we WANT to obey You, but we’re former slaves who’ve been surrounded by idol worship our whole lives. We’re weak! We can’t do this on our own! Please give us Your strength!”

Instead, they confidently said, “We can do it!” – and failed miserably just weeks later. An old man reading this story sighed deeply. “That’s my story too,” he whispered. “Every New Year I promise to read my Bible daily, pray more, be kinder. I’m so sincere! But by February, I’ve failed again.” He remembered Paul’s words: “What I want to do, I don’t do. What I hate, I end up doing!” (Romans 7:15)

Then the old man discovered the secret: Honesty + Surrender = Victory

First, be HONEST: “Lord, I’m weak. My righteousness is like filthy rags. I can’t live the Christian life on my own.”

Second, SURRENDER: “Lord, I give up trying to be good in my own strength. Please live YOUR life in me. Be my strength!”

God’s response is beautiful: “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor. 12:9). The old man finally understood what Paul meant: “I am crucified with Christ. Nevertheless I live – yet not I, but Christ lives in ME!” It’s not about us doing great things for God. It’s about surrendering so God can do great things IN us!

Like a branch connected to a vine, we can’t produce fruit by trying harder. We produce fruit by staying connected to Jesus. He is the vine. We are just branches. Stay connected, and fruit happens naturally! God promises: “He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Phil. 1:6). The One who starts the work will finish it!

Did You Know?  The Israelites’ problem wasn’t lack of sincerity when they promised to obey God – it was lack of honesty about their weakness! Many Christians today make the same mistake. We promise to do better, try harder, be more faithful – but we keep failing. Why? Because we’re trying to obey God in our own strength! Ellen White wrote: “When we give our lives completely to Christ, we become like a strong castle that Satan cannot break into.” We win by giving up and letting Jesus take over, not by trying harder on our own!

🔥 Personal Reflection:

  • Have you been trying to live the Christian life in your own strength?
  • Are you honest with God about your weakness, or do you keep promising to do better?
  • What would it look like to surrender completely and let Christ live His life in you?

🙏 Prayer: Dear Jesus, I confess – I’ve been like the Israelites, sincerely promising to do better but failing over and over. I’ve been trying to live the Christian life in my own strength. Forgive me! Today I’m honest with You: I’m weak. I can’t do this alone. My righteousness is like filthy rags. But I’m also surrendering to You completely. Come live Your life in me! Be my strength! Transform my heart so that obeying You becomes my natural desire. I don’t want to just try harder – I want Christ living in me! That’s my only hope. In Your name, Amen.
