“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” — Matthew 6:33

The Israelite camp buzzed with excitement. They had just crossed the Jordan River on dry ground! The enemy kings were terrified. Their hearts were melting with fear. This was the perfect moment to attack! The military commanders gathered around Joshua. “Sir, we should strike now while the enemy is afraid! This is our chance!” But Joshua raised his hand for silence. “Before we fight any battles, we must do something else first.”

“What could be more important than winning this war?” the commanders asked, confused. “Our covenant with God,” Joshua said firmly. “All the men born during our 40 years in the wilderness have never been circumcised. We neglected the sign of God’s covenant. Before we take one step toward conquering this land, we must renew our covenant with the Owner of this land.” The commanders looked shocked. “But Joshua, circumcision will leave our fighting men weak and in pain for at least three days! We’ll be completely vulnerable! The enemy could attack and destroy us easily!”

“I know,” Joshua said calmly. “But God comes first. Always.” An old soldier stood up, his voice trembling. “Joshua is right. Our parents made this same mistake 40 years ago. They thought military strength and good planning would win battles. They forgot that victory belongs to the LORD, not to us. They died in the wilderness because they didn’t put God first.”

Joshua nodded. “We are not like the nations around us who trust in horses and chariots. We trust in the name of the LORD our God! Before we sharpen one sword, before we plan one strategy, we must show God that He is our priority.”

So they did it. Every man was circumcised. For three days, the entire Israelite army lay in their tents, weak and unable to fight. If the Canaanite armies had attacked at that moment, Israel would have been helpless. But no attack came.

A young boy watching from his tent whispered to his mother, “Mama, we could have been killed! Why did Joshua make us so weak right in enemy territory?”

His mother smiled. “Son, Joshua showed us what really matters. We’re not strong because of our army. We’re strong because God is with us. When we seek God’s kingdom first, He takes care of everything else.”

Years later, that boy – now an old man – still remembered that lesson. “Joshua taught us that day that winning battles isn’t about being the strongest or the smartest. It’s about being right with God first. When we put our covenant with Him before everything else – even when it seems dangerous or foolish – God protects us and gives us victory.”

Did You Know?  The Israelites had neglected circumcision for 40 years during their wilderness wanderings! Why? Because they were constantly moving, living in temporary camps, and probably thought “We’ll do it later when things settle down.” But Joshua knew that renewing their covenant couldn’t wait. Even though it made them vulnerable in enemy territory for three days, putting God first was MORE important than military strategy. This teaches us that worship and commitment to God should never be postponed because of “busy schedules” or “urgent matters”!

🔥 Personal Reflection:

  • What “urgent” things in your life sometimes push worship and time with God aside?
  • How can you show your consecration (complete dedication) to God today?
  • What would it look like to “seek first God’s kingdom” in your daily schedule?

🙏 Prayer: Dear God, forgive me for the times I’ve put “urgent” things before You. Help me be like Joshua – brave enough to put You first even when it seems risky or foolish to others. Teach me that my strength comes from my relationship with You, not from my plans or abilities. When I’m tempted to skip prayer or Bible study because I’m “too busy,” remind me that seeking Your kingdom first is the most important thing I can do. Help me renew my covenant with You every single day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
