“So that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the LORD is mighty, that you may fear the LORD your God forever.” — Joshua 4:24
Twenty years had passed since the Jordan River crossing. Joshua, now an old man, sat by the stone memorial with his grandson Benjamin. “Grandpa Joshua,” Benjamin asked, pointing at the stones, “my friend Caleb says these are just regular rocks. He says the story about God stopping the water isn’t real.” Joshua’s heart felt heavy. This was exactly what he had been afraid of.
“Benjamin,” Joshua said sadly, “come sit close to me. Let me tell you something very important about forgetting.” “But I didn’t forget, Grandpa! I remember the story!” Joshua shook his head gently. “It’s not just about remembering the story, Benjamin. It’s about remembering that our God is still alive and still does amazing things today.” An old woman named Miriam walked by and overheard them. She sat down with tears in her eyes. “Joshua, I’m worried about our people. Some of them have started worshiping the fake gods of our neighbors. They’ve forgotten that our God is the only real God.”
Joshua pointed to the stone memorial. “This is exactly why God told us to build these stones, Miriam. He knew this would happen. He knew people would forget.” Benjamin looked confused. “But how can people forget something so amazing?” “It happens slowly,” Joshua explained. “First, people stop talking about God’s miracles. Then they stop believing the miracles were real. Then they stop trusting God to do new miracles. Finally, they turn to fake gods that can’t help them at all.”
Miriam nodded sadly. “I’ve seen families who used to praise God every day, but now they complain about everything. They’ve forgotten how God saved them from slavery in Egypt and gave them this beautiful land.” Joshua stood up and put his hands on the memorial stones. “Benjamin, your friend Caleb’s family has forgotten something very important. They’ve forgotten that the same God who stopped this river is still taking care of them every single day.”
“What do you mean, Grandpa?” “Who gives them food to eat? Who makes the rain fall on their crops? Who protects them from their enemies? Who gives them families and homes?” Joshua asked. Benjamin’s eyes lit up. “God does all of that!” “Exactly! But when people forget God’s big miracles, they also stop seeing His daily miracles. They think everything good just happens by accident.”
Miriam wiped her tears. “Joshua, what can we do to help people remember?”
Joshua smiled. “We keep telling the stories. We keep pointing to these stones. We keep reminding each other that our God is alive and working every day. And most importantly, we make sure our own hearts never forget.” That evening, Benjamin ran home to tell his parents about his conversation with Grandpa Joshua. He never forgot that lesson about remembering.
Did You Know? The Bible shows us what happened when Israel forgot God’s works – they started worshiping fake gods and got into big trouble! The books of Judges and Psalms tell us that when people forgot God’s miracles, they lost their way and became unhappy. That’s why God gave them memorials and special days to help them remember His goodness!
🔥 Personal Reflection:

- How can you help your family and friends remember God’s goodness?
🙏 Prayer: Dear God, please don’t let me forget all the wonderful things You do for me every day. Help me remember not just the big miracles, but also the small ways You take care of me – like giving me food, family, friends, and a safe place to live. When I start to complain or worry, remind me of Your goodness. Help me tell others about Your amazing works so they won’t forget either. Keep my heart close to You always. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
