“He turned the sea into dry land; they went through the river on foot. There we will rejoice in Him.” — Psalm 66:6

Many years after Joshua died, a young shepherd boy named David sat by a stream, thinking about all the amazing stories his grandfather had told him.

“Grandpa,” David had asked one day, “why does God seem to do so many miracles with water? First the Red Sea, then the Jordan River, and even Elijah crossed the Jordan when he went to heaven!”

His grandfather had smiled. “David, water crossings are special to God. They represent new beginnings – going from one life to a completely different life.”

Now, sitting by the stream, David was thinking about those words when an old prophet walked by. “Young man,” the prophet said, “what are you thinking about so seriously?” “I’m thinking about water miracles,” David replied. “My grandfather told me that crossing water means starting a new life. The Red Sea took our people from slavery to freedom. The Jordan River took them from wandering to having a home.”

The prophet’s eyes lit up. “Ah, you understand something very important! Let me tell you about something even more amazing that will happen someday.”

David sat up straight, excited to hear a new story. “Someday,” the prophet continued, “God will send His own Son to earth. And do you know what will happen? He will come to the Jordan River – the same river your ancestors crossed – and He will be baptized in that water!”

“Baptized? What’s that?” David asked. “It’s like crossing the water, but going under it instead of over it. When God’s Son goes under the Jordan River water and comes back up, it will show that He is starting His work to save the whole world!” David’s mouth dropped open. “The same Jordan River where Joshua’s stone memorial is?”

“The very same one! And when God’s Son comes up out of that water, God’s voice will speak from heaven, and God’s Spirit will come down like a dove. It will be even more amazing than when your ancestors crossed on dry ground!”

Years later, when David had become the king of Israel, he wrote songs about these water miracles. In one song, he wrote: “He turned the sea into dry land; they went through the river on foot. There we will rejoice in Him!”

David understood that every time God worked through water, He was showing His people that He could give them a completely new life. And hundreds of years later, everything the old prophet had told young David came true. Jesus, God’s Son, came to the Jordan River and was baptized, starting His mission to save the world. The same river that had brought new life to Joshua’s people brought new life to everyone who believes in Jesus

Did You Know?  The Jordan River appears in some of the most important moments in the Bible! Joshua crossed it to enter the Promised Land, Elijah and Elisha crossed it when Elijah went to heaven, and Jesus was baptized in it to start His ministry. The Bible shows us that crossing water often represents moving from an old life to a new life with God!

🔥 Personal Reflection:

  • Why do you think God uses water crossings to represent new beginnings?
  • How is Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River connected to Joshua’s crossing?
  • What kind of “new life” does God want to give you?

🙏 Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank You for being baptized in the same Jordan River where Joshua’s people crossed long ago. Thank You for showing us that You came to give us a completely new life with God. Just like the Israelites left their old wandering life behind when they crossed the Jordan, help me leave my old sinful life behind and follow You. Give me a fresh start and a clean heart every day. In Your name, Amen.
