“Then Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, ‘Go, view the land, even Jericho.’ So they went, and came to the house of a harlot named Rahab, and lodged there.” — Joshua 2:1 (NKJV)
Joshua stood at the edge of the camp at Shittim, looking across the Jordan River. His heart was heavy as he remembered what had happened here forty years ago. “This is the same place,” he whispered to himself. “The same place where we failed so badly.”
Forty years earlier, twelve spies had been sent from this very spot to explore the Promised Land. Joshua had been one of them, along with his friend Caleb. They had brought back reports of a wonderful land flowing with milk and honey.
But ten of the spies had also brought back fear. “There are giants in the land!” they had said. “The cities are too strong! We can’t win!”
The people had believed the fearful spies instead of trusting the Lord’s promise. They had cried all night, complained against Moses, and even wanted to choose a new leader to take them back to Egypt. Because of their lack of faith, the Lord had said they would wander in the wilderness for forty years until that whole generation died. Only Joshua and Caleb would live to enter the Promised Land.
But that wasn’t the only terrible thing that had happened at Shittim. This was also where many Israelites had worshipped false gods with Moabite women. Twenty-four thousand people had died because of their sin.
Now Joshua was back at the same place – the place of his people’s greatest failures. “Lord,” Joshua prayed, “we’re at Shittim again. The place where we didn’t trust You. The place where we worshipped false gods. Are You really giving us another chance?” The Lord’s voice was gentle but strong: “Joshua, I am the God of second chances. This time, send only two spies – you and Caleb know how to trust Me. Let’s see what happens when people choose faith instead of fear.”
Joshua smiled and called two faithful men. “Go explore the land, especially Jericho. But this time, you’re not going to look for problems – you’re going to see what the Lord has prepared for us.” As the two spies left, Joshua felt something he hadn’t felt in forty years – hope. The same place that had once been the scene of terrible failure was now going to be the launching point for incredible victory. “Thank You, Lord,” Joshua whispered. “Thank You for not giving up on us. Thank You for letting us try again.”
Sometimes the Lord brings us back to the same places where we failed before – not to punish us, but to show us how much we’ve grown and how much He loves us. This time, things would be different.
Did You Know? Shittim (also called Acacia Grove) was the place where Israel made two big mistakes. First, this is where the scared spies made people afraid to enter the Promised Land, so they had to wander in the desert for 40 years. Second, this is where many Israelites worshipped fake gods and 24,000 people died. But now the Lord was giving them another chance at the exact same place where they had failed before. The Lord loves to give us new opportunities right where we messed up before.
🔥 Personal Reflection:
- Is there a place or situation where you failed before that you’re afraid to face again?
- How does knowing that the Lord is the God of second chances encourage you today?
- What would be different if you trusted the Lord instead of being scared when facing your past mistakes?
🙏 Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You that You don’t give up on me when I fail. Help me remember that You are the God of second chances, third chances, and as many chances as I need. When I have to face places or situations where I failed before, give me courage to trust You instead of being afraid. Help me see these moments not as punishment, but as opportunities to show how much I’ve grown in faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
