“And she said to the men: ‘I know that the LORD has given you the land, that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are fainting because of you… for the LORD your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.'” — Joshua 2:9, 11 (NKJV)

The two Israelite spies knocked nervously on the door of a house in Jericho. They needed a place to hide, and this was the only place that seemed safe.

The door opened, and a woman named Rahab welcomed them in. The spies knew what everyone knew about Rahab – she was a prostitute, someone most people looked down on. But as they talked with her, something amazing happened. “I know the Lord has given you this land,” Rahab said with conviction. “Everyone in Jericho is terrified because we’ve heard what your Creator did for you.”

The spies looked at each other in surprise. This woman was talking about their Creator like she really knew Him! Rahab continued, “We heard how He dried up the Red Sea when you came out of Egypt. We heard how He helped you defeat the kings Sihon and Og. Everyone’s heart is melting with fear.” “But you don’t seem afraid,” one spy said. Rahab’s eyes lit up with faith. “That’s because I believe the Lord your Creator – He is the real one! He is the true ruler in heaven above and on earth below!”

The spies were amazed. Here was a Canaanite woman – and a prostitute – declaring that their Creator was the only true ruler of everything! Even some Israelites didn’t have faith like this. “How do you know this?” the other spy asked. “I’ve been watching and listening,” Rahab replied. “Your Creator is different from our fake gods. He actually does what He promises. He actually takes care of His people. He actually has real power.” The spies realized they were seeing something incredible. Here was a woman that most religious people would reject, but she had more real faith than many who claimed to follow their Creator.

“I want to be on His side,” Rahab said simply. “I want to belong to His people.”

That night, as Rahab helped the spies escape safely, they understood something important: their Creator could find genuine faith anywhere – even in the most unlikely people. Later, the spies told Joshua what had happened. “You won’t believe it,” they said. “We found the strongest faith in Jericho in the house of a prostitute. She knows our Creator is the real ruler of everything!”

Joshua smiled. Their Creator was full of surprises. He could find diamonds of faith in the most unexpected places.

Did You Know? Rahab became part of Jesus’ family line! After Jericho was conquered, she married an Israelite man named Salmon and became the great-grandmother of King David. This means a former Canaanite prostitute became an ancestor of Jesus! The Creator values real faith no matter where He finds it, and He can use anyone who believes in Him for amazing purposes.

🔥 Personal Reflection:

  • What encouragement do you find in Rahab’s story about people the Creator can use?
  • Have you ever been surprised to find strong faith in someone you didn’t expect?
  • How does knowing that the Creator values your heart more than your past mistakes change how you see yourself?

🙏 Prayer: Dear Creator, thank You for the story of Rahab that shows You can find and use anyone who has real faith in You. Help me not judge people by their past or their reputation, but look for the faith You might be growing in their hearts. When I feel like my past mistakes make me useless to You, remind me of Rahab who became part of Jesus’ family. Help me have faith like hers that declares You are the real ruler of everything. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
